چکیده

Studies by Ford et al., concerning the physical properties and distribution of HI clouds in the inner Milky Way using 21 cm HI observations from the Parkes Radio Telescope’s Galactic All-Sky Survey, are reviewed. Individual clouds were identified in regions centered on tangent points at galactic longitudes 25 (quadrant I; hereafter Q1) and 335 (quadrant IV; hereafter QIV) and within 20 of the galactic plane. Clouds in the two regions have similar physical properties and random velocities relative to galactic rotation but are 3 times more populous with double the scale height in QI than in QIV. These asymmetries are attributed to their formation from gas lifted from star formation regions of the spiral arms in the disc by superbubbles and stellar feedback or from fragmenting supershells. Where Does the Disk Turn into the Halo? Cool Hi in the Outer Milky Way Disk

Using HI absorption spectra taken from the recent surveys of λ21-cm line and continuum emission in the Galactic plane, the distribution of cool atomic clouds in the outer disk of the Milky Way is revealed. The warp of the midplane is clearly seen in absorption, as it is in emission, and the cool, neutral medium also shows flaring or increase in scale height with radius similar to that of the wa...

Production of Milky-way Structure by the Magellanic-clouds

Previous attempts at disturbing the galactic disk by the Magellanic Clouds relied on direct tidal forcing. However, by allowing the halo to actively respond rather than remain a rigid contributor to the rotation curve, the Clouds may produce a wake in the halo which then distorts the disk. Recent work reported here suggests that the Magellanic Clouds use this mechanism to produce disk distortio...

Hi Clouds beyond the Galactic Disk

Recent observations in the 21cm line with the Green Bank Telescope have changed our view of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in several ways. The new data show that in the inner parts of the Milky Way the disk-halo interface is composed of many discrete HI clouds. The clouds lie in a layer more than one kpc thick and follow Galactic rotation. Their origin and evolution is unknown. In the o...

Hitting the Bull’s-eye: the Radial Profile of Accretion and Star Formation in the Milky Way

Ongoing star formation in the Milky Way requires continuous gaseous fuel from accretion. Previous work has suggested that the accretion of dwarf galaxies could provide the needed gas for this process. In this work we investigate whether dwarf galaxy accretion is consistent with the radial profile of star formation observed in the Milky Way, which is strongly concentrated toward the center of th...

Tidal Imprints Of A Dark Sub-Halo On The Outskirts Of The Milky Way

We present a new analysis of the observed perturbations of the HI disk of the Milky Way to infer the existence of a dark sub-halo that tidally interacted with the Milky Way disk. We examine tidal interactions between perturbing dark sub-halos and the gas disk of the Milky Way using high resolution Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. We compare our results to the observed HI map o...
